Missionary Handbook

From Application to Launch

INTRODUCTION

Below is a description of the stages of the volunteer application process. Each stage is covered in prayer as we as the Holy Spirit to guide each step. Please note that if at any time during this process you sense God leading you in a different direction, you are not obligated to complete this progress and serve as a missionary under Jesus for Asia.

STAGE 1: Application

Click here to complete the Volunteer Application. Please fill out this form as completely as possible.

Once we receive your application, we will reach out to your references, and you will be asked to complete the Meyers-Briggs 16 Personalities tests. Please note that we must receive input from your references before we move on to Stage 2. If we are unable to connect with any of your references, we will reach out to you to explore options.

STAGE 2: Initial Interview

We will schedule a time to talk with you through video conference (usually Zoom) or in person, if you live in the Collegedale, Tennessee, area.

The purpose of this initial interview is a “meet and greet” where we can get to know each other a little better. We will ask questions to learn more about your interests in missions and how you see God leading you. We will talk together about some considerations to keep in mind and pray about as you move through the stages. We will give additional information on the remaining stages of this process.

This is also a time for you to ask questions and begin to determine if Jesus for Asia is a good fit for you.

STAGE 3: Second Interview With the Missionary Connect Team

We will schedule a time for you to meet with the Missionary Connect Team, which includes members who are currently serving overseas. We will ask questions about how you see yourself serving in an international environment that will be out of your comfort zone. This is where we can explore possible service locations - perhaps with an established mission project or in a new location among the unreached.

There will also be time for you to ask more specific questions about serving in the mission field.

If we collectively determine that a third interview with the Missionary Connect Team is needed to make final decisions, we can certainly schedule one.

STAGE 4: Preparation for Service

By the time you reach Stage 4, you have made the decision to into the mission field under Jesus for Asia, and your location and type of ministry has been decided. Now it’s time to start preparing to go overseas.

This preparation includes:

  • focusing on your personal spiritual growth and faith journey;

  • awareness-raising for your project — we suggest that you establish a small group of people who will join you in praying with you as you go through this process and that you start a blog or vlog to keep your supporters involved with you as you prepare;

  • learning the culture of your chosen field of service;

  • connecting with any other missionaries already in that country;

  • making the determination of which belongings you will bring with you and which you sell, donate, or give away;

  • making whatever financial arrangements are needed in order for you to leave the United States;

  • determining any entry requirements (e.g., any insurance requirements) for the country where you will serve; and

  • making sure you have a passport that is up-to-date. If you need to apply for a passport, click here.

You may be asked to stop by JFA HQ in Tennessee to discuss the launch process in more detail.

STAGE 5: Launch

You have made it to the Stage 5! You now have a target launch date into your mission field.

At this stage you will:

  • pack the items you are taking with you, and, if necessary, pack a shipping container to send your items ahead of your departure;

  • arrange for your airline tickets;

  • apply for your visa;

  • research language-learning opportunities in-country; and

  • finalize any last-minute details needed for you to leave.
